Wordle Helper Guide: Solve Faster with Smart Filtering
Wordle is a pure information game. Each guess should maximise the expected reduction in remaining possibilities. A word unscrambler becomes an excellent helper when you feed it the constraints you already know.
Best Opening Words
Strong openers cover the most frequent letters while avoiding duplicates. Widely tested choices include:
- CRANE – high letter-frequency coverage
- SLATE – another excellent balanced start
- TRACE / CRATE – similar profile
- SOARE – strong vowel + consonant mix
- ADIEU or AUDIO – vowel-heavy if you prefer to resolve vowels early
Pick one and stick with it for consistency; the exact choice matters less than the information-gathering habit that follows.
Turning the Unscrambler into a Wordle Solver
After each guess you receive green (correct position), yellow (present but wrong position), and grey (absent) feedback. Translate that into the tool’s filters:
- Set Word length to 5.
- For every green letter, put it in the correct position using a combination of “Starts with”, “Ends with”, or by mentally fixing the position and using “Contains” plus length.
- For yellow letters, add them to the “Contains” filter so they must appear somewhere.
- Simply omit grey letters from your input; the tool will never suggest words that require letters you do not supply.
Because the tool only returns words formable from the letters you enter, entering only the known present letters (greens + yellows) plus any flexible positions quickly collapses the candidate list.
Example workflow after the guess CRANE returns C green, R yellow, A grey, N yellow, E grey:
- You know the word starts with C.
- It contains R and N somewhere after the first letter.
- It does not contain A or E.
Enter letters that include C, R, N and any other still-possible letters, set length 5 and starts-with C, then scan the results.
Information Theory Tips
When multiple candidates remain, prefer a guess that distinguishes among them rather than one that simply matches the known pattern. A “probe” word that uses new letters can eliminate large groups even if it is not a possible solution itself. In Hard Mode you are forced to reuse greens and yellows, so the probe strategy is restricted.
Common Traps
- Repeating a grey letter – wastes a guess.
- Ignoring position information – a yellow letter cannot occupy the same slot again.
- Forcing a low-probability word too early – keep the remaining set broad until the information forces a choice.
Practice Method
Play the official Wordle (or one of the many clones). After the game, reconstruct the letter constraints and run them through the unscrambler to see how many candidates existed at each step. This trains you to estimate remaining set size without the tool.
Return to the main Word Unscrambler and set the length filter to 5 whenever you want to use it as a live Wordle helper. For general unscrambling technique see How to Unscramble Words.
