Essential 2-Letter Words for Scrabble and Word Games
Two-letter words are the foundation of high-level Scrabble and Words With Friends play. They enable hooks, parallel plays, and the ability to dump awkward tiles while still scoring. Memorising the full set is one of the fastest ways to improve your average score.
Below is a practical list of the most useful two-letter words commonly accepted in English-language word games. Official dictionaries (NWL/TWL, CSW/SOWPODS, ENABLE) differ slightly; always verify for tournament play. The list focuses on words that appear frequently and create useful hooks.

Why These Words Matter
- Hooks – Adding S, D, R, T, etc. to many of these creates three-letter words and scores on both the new and old word.
- Parallel plays – Laying a longer word parallel to an existing one relies on every letter forming a legal two-letter (or three-letter) word.
- Tile dumping – QI, ZA, JO, KA, XI, XU let you play high-value letters that would otherwise sit dead on the rack.
- Board control – Short words can block premium squares or open new ones for your next bingo.
High-Value 2-Letter Plays
QI and ZA are especially powerful because Q and Z are worth 10 points each. Learning every word that takes a Q or Z (including the two-letter ones) is a high-ROI investment. JO, KA, KI, XI, XU, and YE also appear more often than most players expect.
How to Practise
